On the positive side, social media fosters connections and creativity. During the pandemic, many students relied on online communities to combat loneliness. Furthermore, shy teenagers often find it easier to express themselves online, building confidence gradually.

However, the dark side is alarming. Excessive screen time leads to sleep deprivation and poor academic performance. More critically, constant comparison with curated “perfect” lives triggers anxiety and low self-esteem. Cyberbullying remains a serious threat, with anonymous accounts spreading hate without accountability. A study by KKM found that 1 in 3 Malaysian teens experienced online harassment. Moreover, addictive features like infinite scrolling waste hours that could be spent studying or exercising.

To conclude, I believe social media is a double-edged sword. Parents and schools must promote digital literacy — teaching teens to recognise fake news, set screen time limits, and prioritise real-life interactions. When used mindfully, social media can empower; when abused, it can destroy. The choice, ultimately, lies in our hands.
